What is Supervised Experiential Learning

Future Education Model programs have Supervised experiential learning (SEL) hours in place of the matched dietetic internship. Similar to dietetic internships, you must complete at least 1,000 SEL hours to sit for the CDR exam.

For most programs, SEL hours are secured by you in your state of residence. This is great because you can secure hours in subjects that you are interested in and cater the experience to your interests! You also do not have to relocate(for most programs), which can be stressful and challenging.

SEL hours are meant to compliment graduate level coursework. You take classes and complete SEL hours at the same time. This is a “lean while do '' model that has outstanding results thus far.

In my experience at the University of New England, you work with the director of the dietetics program to make sure the SEL locations that you are interested in meet the requirements of ACEND. It is your job to search for preceptors (dietitian who will supervise you) and schedule calls with the program director at the University you are attending. On these calls the potential preceptor, director at your University, and you all meet to discuss what SEL experience you plan on satisfying with the preceptor. The director of the program shares more information about The Future Education Model and requirements that the SEL experience must fulfill in order for it to count towards your 1,000+ hours.

Most preceptors are used to more traditional dietetic internships. The SEL experience is different, but most preceptors are open to learning about the Future Education Model and this different pathway to becoming a dietitian!

It is important to note that some programs require you to secure your SEL hours for the first year of the graduate program before starting the graduate level coursework. SEL hours can take a long time to secure, so most programs encourage students to start this process up to 9 months prior to starting the program full time. This process can take a long time due to affiliation agreements, scheduling, and finding preceptors who are willing to work with you.

Supervised Experiential Learning hours are split into the following categories:

different programs might slightly alter the naming of these rotations

  • Clinical: hospital setting, nursing home, acute care facility.

  • Community: private practice, community health, WIC, outpatient settings.

  • Food Service Management: hospital, nursing home, school lunch programs.

I encourage you to download “The New Way to Become a Dietitian” guide! This is a free guide that covers information about The Future Education Model, Supervised Experiential Learning, and graduate programs that have implemented The Future Education Model.

The guide can be accessed via my website The Dietitian Lab under the services section.
